Surgical Periodontal Therapy

If non-surgical therapy is insufficient to remove the tartar underneath the gums, surgical periodontal therapy (osseous surgery) may be indicated.  Incisions are made around the tooth, and the gum tissue is pulled back slightly. This provides access to thoroughly remove all plaque and calculus. Irregularities of the bone caused by the disease are corrected by either reducing high areas or reconstructing the lost bone. The gum tissue is then placed at a level closer to the bone. When the procedure is completed dissolving sutures are typically used to secure the gums to their new, healthier position.

By moving the gum closer to the bone, the pockets will be reduced or eliminated. By moving the gum closer to the bone, the pockets will be reduced or eliminated. This will allow for oral inflammation to be more readily controlled, increasing the longevity of the teeth and reducing the risk for other systemic diseases.
